Cavtat has greeted the International Worker's Day (May Day) with plenty of promissing sunshine.

With the sea temperature in Cavtat being at 18ºC (65ºF) and all of its beaches being bathed by warm and welcoming sun rays, there is no question whether the beach-going season is to begin.

The beaches beckon. . . so the only question is: Will you come?

(Dubrovnik) Citizens Voted Regarding Srđ Development

Citizens of historic coastal town Dubrovnik voted yesterday in the country's first ever citizen-led referendum on developing Srđ - the hill rising just above the old town. The referendum came to be due to an intense campaign mainly led by local activists, volunteers and environmentalists.

They collected 9085 signatures to force the referendum which asks whether the voter accepts the urban design plans for the 310-hectare development which includes 240 villas, two hotels and 400 apartments and an 18-hole golf course.

According to the law, in order for the referendum to pass, the 50% + 1 vote was needed. However, according to the still unofficial results, out of the total of 38,007 registered voters, 11977 has cast their vote (31.5 %).

77 votes were void and nullified, and out of the remaining 11,897 majority voted against the development, more precisely: 10,051 (84.48&) voted against while 1.846 voted for the project.

The 48 hour interim is lawfully granted so that any irregularites may be remedied before the official results are made public.

Referendum Underway in Dubrovnik

A local referendum (Dubrovnik) is underway. According to the activists, its purpose is to try and save the cultural and natural heritage of the UNESCO city of Dubrovnik which is, they explain, under threat from plans to build a huge golf resort on the Srdj plateau above the city.

The investor, however, maintains that the project is not only not dangerous in terms of its impact on the environment and the cultural heritage of the city, but that it, in fact, will bring more prosperity to its inhabitants as well as to the whole area.

Sailboat Regatta in Cavtat

Today's "Cavtajska Regatta" was to be held in two classes. However, turnout has not been quite as expected. In addition, the Sirocco blew a tad too much cutting the distance short.

Namely, the planned route was to start from the port of Cavtat, go around the peninnsula of Rat to the bay of Tiha. On the way back, the sailboats were to circle the isle of Supetar before heading back to the port. Due to stronger than expected winds out on the open seas, the Supetar part of the route was excluded.

Still, it was nice to see the notion of summer coming into being as the boats set sail and a few curious pairs of eyes from the shore bid them good luck. . .

Konavle's Fort Soko(l) Refurbished and Opened to Visitors

Fort Sokol or Soko-Grad is the biggest fortification on this location (the mountain pass towards Bosnian hinterland). It was built on the site of an earlier Illyrian then Roman fortification, and particularly significant during the Republic of Dubrovnik.

Forgotten and abandoned after the Great Earthquaqe in the second half of the 1600s, the fort was finally restored in the spring of 2013. One can certainly enjoy majestic views of Konavle from the top of its walls.

Cycling Club Konavle Established in Cavtat

April 14, 2013 is a significant date for the cycling sport in southern Croatia, for today - with the establishment of the Cycling Club Konavle - the first cycling collective was formed in Konavle.

The initial assembly was held in Cavtat's cafe bar Mihael. Vlaho Bošković was elected president while Lukša Čupić and Marin Perković were elected as first vicepresidents. Đivo Krilanović i Adrian Bokarica were voted as the board membership.

The club's goal is to enhance awareness of the benefits of cycling as sport and recreational activity, as well as to promote Konavle as cycling-lovers destination. Many interesting and fun cycling happenings are to ensue in the coming season. Announcements will, of course, be made public.

It's noteworthy that the club is open to all newcomers. Namely, all cyclers are welcome to (associate) membership, regardless of their place of residence.
