Konavle hills within the municipality water supply system

With the villages of Stravča, Duba, Brotnice, Jesenice i Šilješci, the Konavle region is now fully included within the municipality water system. The tap water supply was a promise decades ago made to the inhabitants of Gornja banda (Konavle hills). The head of the municipality Mr. Luka Korda, in his sixth mandate now, said it was a project of a lifetime for him.

DON'T GO 'ROUND BARE NAKED!

The honor of the last curtain for this year's (7th) edition of the Music & Word Festival went to Marin Držić Theater Ensamble and their 'Ne vrti se okolo gola golcata' (Don't go 'round bare naked).

The performance in Molunat (southernmost village in the coastal Konavle) was simply beautiful. And so much fun! The acting ensemble did a marvelous job (as usual) and kept the audience on their toes and rolling in laughter throughout the show.

ZIJAH A. SOKOLOVIĆ & HIS CABARET-LIKE STYLE

The night before, on Saturday, the superb cabaret-like performance by Zijah A. Sokolović in Močići was a great ouvertire to the Sunday's Don't go 'round bare naked.

Thus concluded the 7th edition of the Music & Word Festival. This year we were privy to a variety of fun events, including 3 concerts, 1 opera, 4 theater shows, film screenings, an exhibit and a workshop, all organized by the association Konavle Art, and, again this year, all free of charge for all attendees.

Music & Word Festival: 'The Modernists', the top films and - next up - Yiquan

Music & Word Festival made yet another evening artfully delicious, as the exhibit 'The Modernists' showcased some great artwork. That in and by itself surely would have sufficed, but the organizors did not stop there: they offered their visitors the screening of the critically acclaimed films Bunarman, Plašitelj kormorana and Recikliranje -- all three award-winners at the Croatian Film Days.

Sure Nicholson said it in 'Chinatown' and Damon drop the same line in 'Good Will Hunting', but three is a charm, no? So, how do you like them apples!

Next event: YIQUAN ( three-day workshop )

The three-day workshop on YIQUAN begins with a lecture on the said martial arts discipline, more precisely on the system of understanding of the human movement, that is, on the influence of the Western schools of thought on the body culture in China at the beginning of the 20 st.

Music & Word Festival: Sunday night rocked away with 'Atlantida', 'Modernists' opening on Wednesday

The second week of this year's edition of the Music & Word Festival ended with a bang. Classic rock sounds meshed with "Atlantida's" hits from their new album Premalo za san (Too Little for a Dream) to bring rock sound to the space usually reserved for the traditional folk song and dance, the space used to only the sound of traditional Konavle string instruments such as ljerica and tamburica.

KUD Čilipi's terrace was wall-to-wall filled with audience of all ages that, judging by the ambiance and their smiles, loved both the old and the new "Atlantida's" hits. Cudos to the band!

Konavle Art (the association behind the Music & Word Festival) partnered up with the Dubrovnik Association of Fine and Applied Artists (ULIPUD) to create for their audiences a new event, a new delight.

Their Imperial Highnesses the Prince and the Princess Akishino visited Croatia at the invite by the Croatia's President mr. Ivo Josipovic.

Having spent a short while in Zagreb and vicinity, the royal couple then arrived in Konavle where they, accompanied by their delegation and leaders of local and regional government, visited the olive grove and household farming house Glavinja (in Čilipi). Tasting of the olive oil and fresh home-made cheese from Konavle ensued (and to a great delight, attest the unnamed sources :)).

Music & Word Festival: Haydn's Open Air Buffa Enchanted Audience, Atlantida & Guests Next Up

The sounds of Haydn's opera The Apothecary echoed throughout Pridvordje's monastery last night enchanting the audience (very few seats were left unfilled). Originally titled Lo speziale, the three-act buffa was libretted by Carlo Goldoni and first performed to popular and critical acclaim at Eszterháza in the autumn of 1768.

The warm comedy develops around a love triangle between the poor apprentice Mengone, the rich and assured dandy Volpino, and the local apothecary's ward, Grilletta.

The Apothecary was delivered as a single-act opera last night.

Cavtat seabed and beach cleaning event 2013 coming up

Beach and seabed cleaning endeavors have been ongoing in Cavtat for some years now. The first few years of the beach cleaning in Cavtat were truly amazing (and scary). Namely, each year it would take up to two semi-loads to truck away all the garbage that was found and taken out from the sea-bed around Cavtat.

The Bobara Association for Sports Fishing was the first to begin with these praiseworthy efforts. Soon, those fine volunteers were joined by Cavtat Youth Association, then by the Sailing Club Cavtat which spearheaded the efforts until 2012 when the town's committee took over.

The crucial assistance was given by the two scuba-diving clubs located in Cavtat ('Epidaurum' and 'Cavtat'), Konavle Sanitation and the Tourist Board of Konavle.

The Adriatic cleaning efforts, though praiseworthy are not unique.

For instance, Ocean Conservancy 'educates and empowers citizens to take action on behalf of the ocean.

Due to the public change of consciousness, nothwithstanding the continuous efforts on part of the volunteers (about 30 each year) to preserve the sea floor naturally beautiful and clean, there was much less garbage found recently.

This year's cleaning event in Cavtat will take place on Saturday, June 15th. All volunteers are welcome to join in.

Konavle's Association for Agrotourism hosted 200 UM students on their field trip

A large group of students from Universty of Mostar made a field-trip to Konavle today. Exploring varies sites related to agrotourism, from the refurbished traditional houses or monasteries to the remnants of Illyric sites, the aimed to learn firsthand how tourism and ecology successfully intertwine.

Prior to heading to the more rural area of Konavle the Tourism and Ecology majors stopped in Cavtat, visiting the Bukovac House and Museum and the Račić Mausoluem.

While in the preserved location of Ljuta, the students had the opportunity to a presentation of varies projects undertaken by Konavle Association for Agrotourism. The lecture was held by mr. sc. Ivo Mujo, the Association's president.

Konavle Association for Agrotourism is the premier local non-governmental organization for the development of rural tourism. It numbers more than 100 members and undertakes numerous projects tied to preserving and further developing Konavle as the top destination for leisurely-recreative vacation and all things related to rural tourism.

The students were amazed to learn how the Konavle region, which is included in the European NATURA 2000 (the largest network of protected areas anywhere in the world), has made considerable developmental advancements while preserving its ecological balance and natural beauty.

Leona Sentić wins 'Konavle Looking for a Star'

The six grader Leona Sentić topped the 15 competitors in this year's edition of the 'Konavle looking for a star' singing contest. Her wonderful interpretation of Zaz's 'Je Veux' won over the audience as well as the panel of judges (D. Lukić, I. Puljić, P. Mihatović, Z. Cvjetković). Leona was in turn awarded a painting (by Antonija Rusković Radonić) and a special beauty package (provided by the beauty salon 'Look').

Last year's winner Nikolina Rilović landed a second place with her 'Lullaby', while the third place was shared by Petar Kolić ('You taught me') and Marijana Bušković ('When I'm Gone').

'Konavle Looking for a Star' is a children's singing contest. First held in 1969., it's been organized annually by the grades schools Cavtat and Gruda and Our Children Association.

Tonka Bušković, first-grader from Gruda and a debutant, won the Star-of-the-Evening Award impressed the special panel of judges (Miss Konavale N. Šmanjak, rapper M. Klajić, T. Jovanović) with her interpretation of 'My Boyfriend is Dangerous' and was awarded the sun glasses (by Optics Van Gogh).

Frano Šmanjak has done a great job coaching the young 'stars' who have all enjoyed a loud support from the audience.

Man on Earth Festival to conclude in the Konavle Ethnographic Museum

This year's edition of the four-day annual Man on Earth Festival ( Čovjek na zemlji ) organized by its namesake association will conclude on Sunday, June 2, in the Konavle Ethnographic Museum.

Cycling events, educational walks through nature, film projections and lectures are all utilized as to raise awareness about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, biodiversity of the region, the local folklore and traditional crafts (i.e. cooperage).

Entrance to ALL venues and events is FREE OF CHARGE.

The KEM was founded in 1974. It is located in the central square of the Konavle village of Čilipi, in a building that used to be the village treasury. It was rebuilt and restacked after being burned down in 1991 (during the Homeland War).

Although the significant portion of its items was irreplaceably lost, the collection was renewed and now holds about 500 items, including male and female folk costumes, embroidery and other textile handcrafts, jewellery, arms, musical instruments and items used in the everyday life. The permanent display also includes a selection of the traditional needlework made by the Cavtat folklore society Jelka Miš.
